Mold questions
How do I know if I have mold behind a wall?
The common signs are a musty smell that won’t air out, stained or bubbling paint on drywall, warped baseboards, and allergy symptoms that ease when you leave the house. Any wall that got wet from a leak or flood and was never properly dried is a candidate. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find wet cavities before anything is opened up.
Signs of mold you can check yourself →Where should I look first?
Low and behind things. Check the bottom six inches of drywall on exterior walls, under kitchen and bathroom sinks, behind toilets, around the washing machine hookup, and where the floor meets the wall in a finished basement. In winter, check the window sills on the north side of the house, where condensation lingers longest.
Can I just spray bleach on it or paint over it?
No. Killing the surface growth does nothing about the water feeding it, and it hides the evidence you’d want for an insurance claim. The moisture source has to be found and dried, and the mold removed to industry protocols.
When should I call for an inspection?
When a musty smell keeps coming back, when you know a pipe, appliance or roof leaked and nobody ran drying equipment afterward, or when a stained area is bigger than a dinner plate. Thermal imaging and a pin meter tell us from the room side whether the framing behind a stain is still damp.
Does insurance cover mold remediation?
Sometimes, usually with a dollar cap. Many South Dakota policies include a limited mold endorsement that applies when the growth comes from a covered water event that was dealt with promptly. Wait two weeks with a wet crawlspace and the insurer may call it neglect, so acting fast keeps the conversation simple.
How water damage claims work →Can I check the humidity myself?
Yes. A cheap hygrometer from the hardware store tells you a lot: anything above about 60 percent indoors, especially in a basement, is friendly to mold. Outdoor air in Rapid City is dry most of the year, so a room that stays musty stands out.
