Getting an RV interior ready before rally week
If your rig has been parked since last fall and you plan to use it during rally week, get the interior cleaned two to four weeks out rather than the first week of August. The stretch right before the Sturgis motorcycle rally is the heaviest RV work we see all year, and the calendar fills from both directions — full-timers arriving early and locals pulling coaches out of storage in Box Elder, Piedmont and Black Hawk at the same time. A typical coach interior takes a few hours: carpet and any upholstered dinette or captain's chairs, then odor treatment to clear out the closed-up smell that builds over a Black Hills winter.
What happens to an RV interior over a Black Hills winter
Cold, dry months are hard on a sealed rig in a different way than humidity is. Fine grit works its way in through vents and slide seals, and every gravel driveway from Hermosa to Summerset contributes to it. Rodents look for shelter once temperatures drop, and they leave contamination in cabinets and under dinette benches that a shop vac will not neutralize. The bigger issue is moisture: a slow drip at a roof seam, a window seal that failed, or a water heater connection that let go during a hard freeze. That shows up as a stain on the ceiling board, a soft spot in the floor or a musty smell that gets stronger when the doors are shut. We do water damage restoration in Rapid City year round, and the same drying principles apply in a coach — find the wet material with a moisture meter before you cover the smell up.
Does cleaning get rid of pet and smoke odor?
Usually, yes, if the source comes out with it. Odor that sits in carpet backing or a cushion foam has to be extracted, not masked, so we clean first with hot water extraction and then treat what is left. Pet urine in an RV is often concentrated in one or two small areas near a door or a favorite spot by the couch, and those get treated directly. Smoke odor from a campfire-heavy season is a different problem and usually responds to cleaning plus a deodorizing step. If a leak has been feeding mold behind a panel, cleaning alone will not solve it — that becomes a remediation job, and we handle mold remediation in Rapid City SD and the surrounding towns to the same industry protocols we use in houses.
Can you clean it where it is parked?
Most of the time. Our truck-mounted equipment runs hoses into a coach parked in a driveway, a storage lot or a yard, which keeps the heat and vacuum at the truck instead of dragging a machine through a narrow aisle. What we need is reasonable access and somewhere to pull in. That same setup handles aircraft cabins, and we clean those for owners hangared in the area as well.
What else is worth doing before guests arrive
If you rent your coach out or you run a cabin or vacation rental in Deadwood, Lead or Hill City, the turnover schedule during rally week is tight. Booking the interior work ahead of the first arrival is easier than squeezing it between renters. The same crew does upholstery cleaning in Rapid City homes and commercial carpet cleaning for offices, so a combined visit for a rental property and a coach is often possible on one trip.
We are IICRC certified and BBB accredited, based on US-16 in Rapid City, and we cover Sturgis, Spearfish, Custer, Keystone and the rest of the Hills. Call ahead of the rally and pick a date while there are still open ones — after that we are mostly on emergency water extraction and flood cleanup calls.
